Keep the Charleston Moving

The Charleston is one of the most distinctive parts of American Mahjong—but for beginners, remembering which direction comes next can quickly become confusing.

This American Mahjong Charleston Tracker provides a simple visual reference for the familiar sequence:

R – O – L / L – O – R

Place the movable marker on the current position, complete the pass, then move the marker forward.

Instead of asking:

“Are we passing right or left?”

everyone can simply look at the tracker.

The letters represent:

R — Right
O — Opposite / Across
L — Left

Under commonly played American Mahjong Charleston rules, the first sequence is Right → Across → Left. A second Charleston, when continued, reverses the direction to Left → Across → Right.
