Keep the Charleston Moving

The Charleston is an important part of American Mahjong, but remembering every passing direction can be challenging—especially for new players or groups learning together.

This American Mahjong 6-Step Charleston Tracker displays the familiar sequence:

R – O – L / L – O – R

Place a die, coin or small token in the first recessed space. After each pass is completed, move the marker forward one position. Everyone at the table can then see the current direction without stopping the game to ask, “Where are we?”

Clear Six-Pass Layout

The first Charleston follows:

Right → Across → Left

When the group continues with the optional second Charleston, the sequence reverses:

Left → Across → Right

The first three passes form the first Charleston. The second three passes are performed only when the table proceeds with the second Charleston.
