The Charleston is one of the most recognizable parts of American Mahjong, but remembering the complete passing order can be confusing—especially for beginners or groups learning together.
This American Mahjong Charleston Tracker displays the complete visual sequence:
R – O – L / L – O – R / C
Place a die, coin or small marker in the first window. After each pass is completed, move the marker to the next position so everyone at the table can immediately see the current stage.
Clear ROLLORC Layout
The letters represent:

O — Opposite / Across

C — Courtesy Pass

The first Charleston follows Right → Across → Left and is normally required. The second Charleston reverses the sequence to Left → Across → Right and occurs only when all players agree. The Courtesy Pass is optional and allows opposite players to exchange zero to three tiles.
